What is Web 2.0 Surgery?

Web 2.0 Surgery is a free drop-in event where independent businesses, freelance professionals and community groups can get advice from web experts on developing their website or ways to use free social media networks to grow their organisation. The project has helped a start-up business to sell online, a charity to use social networks for free promotion and a performance group to use live web video streaming to engage with audiences.

Second Wednesday web meet-up

After Web 2.0 Surgery, stay around for Second Wednesday, the monthly gathering of Nottingham’s web development community where you can find out more about web development and marketing and meet professionals.

August 11th – Copywriting talk, 7pm, Broadway Cinema

August’s talk is by Camilla Zajac from Green Light Copywriting.  Based on her experience of creating unique content for blogs, websites and other communications, Camilla will share five things you can do to turn copy from information into inspiration.

As Director of Green Light Copywriting, Camilla Zajac has created content for organisations as varied as E.ON, Barnardo’s and the NHS – and written for growing businesses on everything from luxury cakes to law!

Copywriting isn’t just about spelling and grammar. It isn’t purely about branding. Or communications. Or marketing. It’s about all these aspects and more.

Done right, copywriting can help companies sell themselves more powerfully, build their brand and stand out in a crowded marketplace.

We’ve also got a brand new venue for the summer: Broadway Media Centre (Mezze Lounge, 1st Floor).
After the event you can take advantage of their Orange Wednesday 2-for-1 film offers and great film and food spcial offers too.

With the continued rise of social networks and the increased use of the online space in finding work, clients and contracts, how you choose to present yourself online is becoming more and more important. But before you throw yourself around the web, there are some things that you need to think about first.  Alexia will run through the five questions you need to ask yourself before throwing yourself about online.

Time For A Change

Change

The last 11 Web 2.0 Surgery events have been organised by Martin Wright. Due to other time commitments he no longer has time to organise the event.

Web 2.0 Surgery was created to be:

This event is aimed at small and medium sized companies and organisations, as well as individuals, who use the Internet to operate their business but have questions on how to effectively use the wealth of Web 2.0 tools and services available.”

New Start

We would like the event to flourish in the hands of others and are actively seeking someone to take the event to the next level. If you are interested, please contact us at: contact [at] web20surgery.com

Thanks to all the experts and attendees who have taken part so far.

February Event

The event had good attendance with many more experts than businesses. We had round table discussion and the following topics came up:

  • Buy With Confidence is a directory of traders vetted by Trading Standards. Nottingham is one of the few places to be included in the scheme. For £65 you can be listed on the site which can provide you with leads.
  • There is high demand for PHP programmers and Flash Developers at the moment but no easy way to find them. Although we had both at the event – Jon Newby of Jooby Design is a flash developer.
  • Is there a resource listing all Nottingham freelance creatives? Should there be one?
  • New expert Kris Leech of Interkonect was able to assist Implanta Design with CMS advice and Golfshake with systems admin advice.
  • Free training available from eBusiness Insights if your company employs between 10-49 staff.

2010 Events

New Venue and New Time

We’ve decided to move Web 2.0 Surgery to Antenna on Beck St. This venue opened in October 2009 and is home to many creative professionals. It is a great meeting space with bar and restaurant as well as business facilities – meeting rooms, wifi etc.
We’re also beginning the event earlier at 5.30pm. This is prompted by feedback from attendees and should open the event to a wider audience.

Dates

The first dates for the year are:

  • Thursday 18th Feb 2010
  • Thursday 18th March 2010
  • Thursday 15th April 2010

eBusiness Champions – Google Analytics

The next eBusiness Champions event is on Thursday 26 28th January 2010 at Cape, Victoria St, Nottingham.

The event will cover Google Analytics topics including setup, metrics, goals, filters, benchmarking and reporting. This will be an ideal introduction to the subject for those who are not yet using the tool and those you have not yet mastered it. If you are trying to understand how customers use your site and understand more about conversions, this session will help.

Please register your interest in the event.
